Project Analysis

Lava Rising 2 was designed as a simple 2D Platformer with a single touch input. During development I consulted with several testers to playtest key elements such as lava speed and damage to ensure a good balance between difficulty and reward was found. Each "level" was tested to ensure players can ascend with movement strategy while being easily accessible to new players.

The game was built on the game "Lava Rising" I previously released to the App Store with the intention of updating the graphics, having a better movement system and providing better feedback to the gameplay.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Designed the 2D Layout using Unity 2D Tilemaps and 2D Box colliders.

  • Concepted the lava and trap mechanics.

  • Made the game playable with a single-tap interface (Only input needed is jump).

  • Implemented a small UI displaying score and health.

  • Created semi-random level generation using a series of pre-designed "levels" and merging them in random series.

  • Implemented saving using an instantiated class.

  • Created the lava rising mechanic to always remain visible on the players display.

  • Created moving traps.

  • Created a basic animation controller.

Working on this project was a great opportunity to design a mobile game while also listening to player feedback on the prior release. I gained more experience in scripting, game design and mobile development.
